Pomquet

Located on the northeastern coast of Nova Scotia in Antigonish County, Pomquet is one of the province's oldest Acadian communities. Founded in the late 18th century by Acadian families returning from exile after the Deportation, the community has successfully preserved its language, culture, and rich heritage over the generations.

Today, Pomquet is recognized for its strong sense of belonging and its commitment to the vitality of the Acadian community. The French language remains very much alive here, thanks to a network of institutions and organizations that contribute to its influence. The École acadienne de Pomquet, part of the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP), plays an essential role in passing on the French language, Acadian culture, and Francophone identity to young people. It serves as the true heart of the community, hosting numerous educational, cultural, and family activities.

The Société acadienne Sainte-Croix, through its community center, is also a pillar of community life. It offers diverse programming throughout the year, including cultural, social, recreational, and intergenerational activities that bring together families, seniors, and youth. Among the most popular events is the Pomquet Winter Carnival, a tradition that enlivens the community with outdoor activities, family gatherings, and celebrations that showcase Acadian culture and the spirit of solidarity that defines the region.

The region is also famous for Pomquet Beach, known for its fine sand and some of the warmest waters north of Virginia. During the summer season, it attracts many visitors who come to enjoy its scenery, hiking trails, and the beauty of the Northumberland Strait coastline.
