Par-en-Bas

Par-en-Bas is a vibrant Acadian region located in southwestern Nova Scotia, primarily within the Municipality of Argyle. Known for its strong sense of belonging to Acadian culture, the region is composed of several coastal villages where French and Acadian traditions play a significant role. Fishing remains a pillar of the local economy and helps shape the community's identity.

Par-en-Bas is also rich in history, heritage, and expertise passed down from generation to generation. The region is distinguished by its magnificent maritime landscapes, iconic lighthouses, bustling ports and fishing wharves, as well as its numerous lakes and recreational spaces that promote an active lifestyle and outdoor activities.

The region's vitality is also supported by committed cultural, community, and educational organizations and infrastructure. The Conseil acadien du Par-en-Bas plays an essential role in the development of community, cultural, and social life by offering varied programming that brings together citizens of all ages. The Musée des Acadiens des Pubnicos, the oldest Acadian museum in Nova Scotia, showcases the history, heritage, and traditions of the region's Acadians through its exhibits, historic buildings, and educational activities. The Salle Père Maurice-LeBlanc, recognized as an important cultural venue, hosts shows, concerts, plays, and various community events throughout the year that contribute to the region's artistic and cultural vitality.

French-language education also holds an important place thanks to the schools of the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP): École Belleville, École Pubnico-Ouest, École Wedgeport, and École secondaire de Par-en-Bas. Together, these schools provide quality French-language education and play an essential role in transmitting the Acadian language, culture, and identity, while contributing to the community's dynamism and future.

In 2024, Par-en-Bas proudly hosted part of the Congrès mondial acadien programming, welcoming thousands of participants who came to celebrate Acadian culture, history, and heritage. This major international event helped showcase the region's vitality, the richness of its landscapes, the commitment of its volunteers, and the legendary hospitality of its people.
